eep UNIVERSAL SERIES SERVICE MANUAL H l I 23 Condenser g gg The condenser prolongs the life of the distributor in points by preventing arcing at the contacts It also provides a hotter spark by creating a reverse surge Z 2 of tzurrent which rapidly breaks down the magnetic held of the coil by demagnetizing the core Should the ccncenser be leaky a weak spark will result liiiii E V Check the condenser lead for broken wires or frayed insulation Clean and tighten the connections i on the terminal posts Be sure the condenser is mounted firmly on the distributor for a good ground ig y connection 3 Should a condenser tester be available the capacity should check from 18 to 23 microfarads In the j absence of a tester check by substituting new con 8 denser vv Ei t s H 2l 1 Distributor Points i aa Examine distributor points Using Tool C 4094 check point contact spring pressure should he Q2 l t l Qs 19 to 23 oz 0 538 a 0 652 kg Install new points A A Y if they are worn pitted mate poorly or show signs fl g of metal transfer Should prematureignition point failure occur because of dust entering the distri i c buior cap and causing excessive wear to the ignition V point filer block perform the following correc tions after installing new distributor points i 13399 J v V FIG H 10 DELCO DIEE5 RIBUTOR r g ii DAUNTLESS V 6 ENGINE A i Z i i 1 iii drow h C ell Fg l if ji i AllW 10 I r I Cap Ltactisher ap ll Pifir if1 ryLI iead 5 eRotor Mounting Screw 12 eContact Set j fg L kW 1 13 C 1 e zt r r c eAd1yanc T I clianism Om Cnscr by built in centrifugal weights and by a vacuum M I advance system Contact point opening is adjusted g nl itg r A 3 through a window in the distributor cap while the V ti r a engine is idling Some parts of the distributor may V I g be checked or replaced with the distributor mount 4 Z k or f V i i E ed on the engine but it is best to remove it periodi y f f r x ais i V AVV V g r jjfjffi r cally for a thorough check In formation on parts if ii which can be serviced without removal is given f Note Prestolite and Delco distributors are inter V sgi A changeable on V 6 engine equipped vehicles L I E H 21 Distributor Cap The distributor cap should be inspected for cracks carbon runners and evidence of arcing If any of these conditions exist the cap should be replaced if Clean any corroded high tension terminals i 5 H 22 Rotor Ei Q Inspect the rotor for cracks or evidence of exces sive burning at the end of the metal strip V After a distributor rotor has had normal use the end of the rotor will become burned If burning is i Q 2 found on top of the rotor it indicates the rotor is too short and needs replacing Usually when this iiig MNB condition is found the clistributor cap segment will i be burned on the horizontal face and the cap will FICr H 11 SEAL1ZNG DISTRIBUTOR CAP also need replacing 1 Caull ring Compound 183
