jeep UNIVERSAL SERIES SERVICE MANUAL M If the joint binds when assembled tap the yoke lightly to relieve any pressure on the bearings at 4 2 V3 V g the end of the journal M 8 Steering Knuckle Service The steering knuckle pins pivot on tapered roller bearings Replacement of these bearings requires removal of the hub and brake drum assembly wheel bearings axle shaft spindle steering tie rod and steering knuckle Disassernble the steering knuckle as follows N I Remove the eight screws which hold the oil seal v v v retainer in place Remove the four screws holding V the lower pivot pin bearing cap Remove the four ry g screws holding the upper bearing cap in place Re move the bearing cap The steering knuckle can V 2 rrig Q r iz now be removed from the axle QVash all parts in l cleaning solvent Replace any damaged or worn A parts Inspect the bearing and races for scores I i cracks or chips Should the hearing cups be ii I sa damaged they may he removed and installed with r l Special Driver W l38 as shown in Fig NI 9 M 9 Fleassemble and Bearing Preload Z Reverse the procedure of Par M 8 to reassemble i 0 T1 the unit When reinstalling the steering knuckle mlm SLIBECICULIZ shims IYIUSIZ be IY1SIZ3Ill d uI ld I the top FICL B L10 T UEaNING AKNGLE STOP SCREW bearing cap to obtain correct preload on the bear ing Shims are available in th ese thicknesses lTSt p Smw 00 3 0 076 mm 010 0 254 mm 0o 5 0 127 mm n3g 9 7452 null lI l Il 1 0 Replacing Steering Knuckle Oil Seal Install one each of the above shilns at the top only Remove the old steering knuckle oil seal by remov Install the bearing caps loczlrwashers and screws ing the eight screws which hold it in place Earlier and tighten securely production vehicles are equipped with seals con Check the preload on the bearings by hooking a si s1 ing of two oil seal halves Later production spring scale Tool C 690 in the hole in th e knuckle vehicles are equipped with oil seal assemblies con arm for the tie rod socket Take the scale reading sisting of a split oil seal and backing ring assembly when the knuckle has just started its sweep an oil seal felt and two seal retainer plate halves The kingpin bearing preload should be 12 to 16 lb Examine the spherical surface of the axle for 5 43 a 7 24 kg with the oil seal removed Remove seores or scratches which could damage the seal or add shims to obtain a preload within these limits 1EE3inooth any roughness with emery cloth lESefore installing the oil seal felt make a diagonal cul across the top side of the felt so that it may be slipped over the axle Install the oil seal assembly in the sequence given above making sure the lv I I Igaeking ring of the oil seal and backing ring as I I sernbly is toward the wheel V L Zlg A After driving in wet freezing weather Swing the N i r front wheels from right to left to remove moisture 1 adhering to the oil seal and the spherical surface of i g ill i the axle housing This will prevent freezing with J V I i resulting damage to the seals Should the vehicle be i i VC t A l stored for any period of time coat these surfaces l i i g r r with light grease tp pr v t rustips ii is il i 2 z 0 jf INI lll AXLE SHAFT INSTALLATION Refer to Fig MVZ gw Installation of the front right and left axle shaft W 1 V r V V is the Same and is given inthe following paragraphs I LW ilv iI i iz Clean all parts of dirt and foreign matter J ii i lilsi i i i I i i if xi lh Enter universal joint and axle shaft assembly mm in the axle housing taking care not to knock out pro Mase SPINDLE pm Brz A R1No cup DRIVER lilhe inner oil seal Enter the splined end of the 1 r0 1w 1a s axle shaft into the differential and push into place 281
